This plant is a friend to bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies, especially monarchs that lay eggs and thrive on this plant. However, deer tend to avoid it.
Please note that all parts of this plant are toxic, and the milky sap can irritate the skin.
Creating a burst of color in their first year of growth, this tropical milkweed is a must-have for butterfly gardens, as monarchs thrive with this flower. Some companies attempt to market the silk from the pods for pillow stuffing or fabric production.
For spring planting, mix the seeds in damp soil and refrigerate for 30 days before sowing in the garden, just below the surface (1/8’’ deep). This variety of milkweed tolerates partial shade and adapts to both dry and moist soils. Pots can be brought indoors during winter, and mature plants can be divided.
