25 seeds
Type: Annual Height: 80’’ Exposure: Full sun
This plant is a friend to bees, butterflies, and birds.
This elegant sunflower with bronze and reddish colors produces magnificent cut flowers. Sunflowers are named for their habit of turning their faces towards the sun. In the early stages of development, they exhibit heliotropism (following the sun from east to west), although mature flowers typically end up facing east.
The long roots of this plant need space to grow adequately and do not like to be disturbed. Directly sow your sunflower seeds in the garden after the soil has thawed, about 1/2’’ deep and 6 to 8 inches apart. Germination should occur within 7 to 10 days after planting. Metal protection or netting may be necessary to shield the seeds from birds or other hungry animals.
As they grow, water the seedlings until they establish. Once mature, the plants tolerate drought. Overwatering can lead to diseases such as fungal issues.
