The Hungarian Hot Pepper is a bright yellow chili, moderately spicy (2000 Scoville units), averaging around 5 inches in length, turning red when mature. The plants grow up to 24 inches tall and are highly productive.
Eight weeks before the last expected frost, sow your seeds indoors at a depth of 1/2 inch and maintain an ambient temperature of 60-65°F (25-30°C). Provide them with adequate light to prevent the plants from becoming leggy. When all risk of ground frost has passed, acclimate your plants for a few days and plant them in the garden, spacing them 12 to 16 inches apart. Pepper plants prefer rich, moist soil free of weeds, so provide them with mulch to help with better control.
Normally, peppers have a spicier flavor if they ripen longer on the plant. However, ripe peppers signal the plant to stop production. Harvesting them while still green ensures a longer vegetable production.
