One month before the last expected frost, sow the seeds indoors in peat pots at a depth of 1/4''. You can also sow them directly in the garden when all risk of frost is eliminated. Space the sowings about 10'' apart in rich, moist, and well-drained soil, in full sun. You can control soil moisture and weeds by using mulch.
The bulb has the best flavor when it reaches 4''. At this size, you can harvest it whole, or you can consume the leaves when they reach a satisfactory size for you. To harvest fennel seeds, pick the head of the plant when it begins to mature and turn light brown. Spread them out to dry and rub them to release the seeds. Pregnant women should avoid high doses of fennel.
