Lettuce can be sown directly in the ground as soon as it is workable, as it prefers to grow in cool weather. When the soil temperature exceeds 24°C (75°F), the seeds become dormant. Provide it with rich, well-drained soil and full sun, and sow the seeds as finely as possible, thinning them to 6 inches apart once they have germinated. You can plant them every 2 weeks to ensure a continuous supply of fresh lettuce.
Lettuce has shallow roots, so it requires ample moisture to stay sweet and tender. Mulching is a good option to help retain soil moisture and keep it virtually weed-free. Most types of lettuce will produce a second or even a third harvest after being cut. When the central stem starts to grow, the lettuce leaves become bitter.
