Fordhook Swiss Chard produces large, crinkled green leaves with white stalks and veins. The stalks resemble celery, and its leaves are tender and juicy.
Plant your Swiss chard directly in the garden, one week after the last expected ground frost, at a depth of ½ inch in rich, well-drained soil, about 5 inches apart or 10 inches for larger plant growth. You can sow them every two weeks for a continuous harvest. The plant can reach 24 inches in height.
The leaves can be harvested individually as soon as they reach 8 inches high, and you can cut them one inch above the surface of the soil for a new harvest from the same plant. The flavorful leaves can be used fresh or frozen.
