A symbol used in memory of soldiers lost in combat, the red poppy is one of the most well-known wildflowers in the world. Very easy to grow, it self-seeds readily to thrive again the following year. The poppy is one species of poppy among many, and this variety does not contain opium.
As soon as the soil is workable in spring, sow your poppy seeds just below the soil surface (1/4 inch). Keep the soil moist until germination, which should occur within 10 to 15 days. Poppy plants do not appreciate being transplanted; if you do so, the plants may wither and die. Once the plants are mature, they tolerate drought well but appreciate water during dry periods.
