Pepper cress has a tangy and strong flavor reminiscent of traditional watercress. When sprouted, the fresh or dried pods make a seasoning formerly known as 'Poor Man's Pepper.' Pregnant women, however, should avoid consuming excessive quantities of the leaves.
It grows almost anywhere but prefers full sun or partial shade in rich, moist, and well-drained soil. After the last spring frost, sow the seeds directly at a depth of 1/4'', spacing them 6'' apart. It is necessary to keep the soil moist for better growth.
Pepper cress will have a milder taste if grown in spring and/or fall. Heat tends to give the leaves a bitter taste. For continuous harvest, sow new seeds every 10 days. Pepper cress is also an ideal plant for indoor cultivation and regrows when cut.
Mulch and weed your pepper cress thoroughly. Its shallow roots can easily be disturbed during weeding, so be sure to be careful.
