Lentils are bushy, branched annual plants, reaching approximately 40 cm in height. Pods appear late in the season and contain 2 flattened seeds.
Sow from March to April in soil that is beginning to warm. Choose a sunny location with rich, well-worked soil free from weeds. Plant 4 to 5 seeds per hole, spaced about 30 cm apart, and water generously. Germination should occur within about ten days.
Once the plants reach a height of around ten centimeters, mound soil around them; this promotes root development and helps them stand upright. It may be necessary to provide support to prevent the plants from collapsing.
During flowering, water requirements increase; therefore, regular watering is crucial, especially during dry periods.
Harvest generally begins around late July and continues until September. The plants will have taken on a golden yellow color at this time. Cut the plants and let them dry in the sun for a whole day, then form bundles that you will hang in a dark and well-ventilated place. Beat the bundles once the plants are thoroughly dry.
