Sweet marjoram grows well in pots indoors or outdoors.
This oregano-flavored herb is typically grown as an annual plant.
About 4 weeks before the last frost, start your sweet marjoram seeds indoors. Sow the seeds just below the surface of the soil and keep the soil moist. Germination can take up to 21 days. Once all risk of frost has passed, you can transplant it into the garden, spacing plants 12 inches apart in well-drained soil and full sun. Sweet marjoram likes to be neglected; only water it in persistent drought conditions.
Harvesting of leaves or stems can begin when the plant reaches 6 inches in height. It's best to regularly cut the plant to prevent flowering, which can make the taste of the leaves somewhat bitter.
The small gray-green leaves should be harvested before the appearance of flowers and will retain their flavor once dried.
