This heirloom variety reaches an impressive height of 7 to 9 feet.
Sunflowers attract birds, bees, and butterflies.
Sunflower plants do not like transplantation, and their roots need space to develop well, so it is preferable to sow them directly in the garden. When the soil has warmed up to around 20°C (70°F), plant several sunflower seeds together at a depth of 1 inch and 6 inches apart in rich, well-drained, and moist soil. Germination will occur within 8 to 10 days.
Mature plants can tolerate periods of drought; it is even better not to overwater to avoid fungal diseases. The installation of a protective net may be necessary to prevent squirrels or birds from eating the seeds. The flower will drop its petals, and the back of its head will turn brown when the seeds are ready. Cut the flowers, leaving several inches of stem, and hang them upside down in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Once completely dry, scrape the flowers by hand to release the seeds and store them in an airtight container.
